Ex-display floorboards turn into new gifts for London flooring company

In 2023, London-based flooring specialist Solid Floor invited Christoph Studio—alongside other designers, makers, and artists—to reimagine surplus flooring materials, giving them a second life instead of letting them go to waste. More than a one-off project, the company sought long-term partnerships with creatives who could continuously repurpose their ex-display materials. The resulting works were showcased at RECREATE during Shoreditch Design Triangle.

Inspired by Solid Floor’s Columbia Road showroom—set amidst London’s iconic Sunday flower market—Christoph Studio developed FLOORA, a collection of playful plant stands. Designed as small, giftable objects, they offer a light-hearted take on sustainability while transforming otherwise discarded materials into something functional and desirable. The collection features three postures—Walking, Sitting, and Yoga—each made from Solid Floor’s 18mm-thick floorboards, combining a 6mm oak veneer with a 12mm plywood base.

The positive responses at RECREATE confirmed the potential of creative-industry partnerships to merge sustainability with design. Shortly after, FLOORA found a home at Epitome on Columbia Road and Bluecoat Display Centre in Liverpool, joining carefully curated selections of contemporary design.

The FLOORA plantstands are a perfect example of using the whole of the engineered board.  The design elegantly incorporates the top layer of the timber as well as the plywood that is normally not seen when fitted as a floor, highlighting the beauty of both. The idea behind FLOORA’S tread lightly concept aligns perfectly with our Re-create project.
